The Zimmerman case has been the talk of town for a while now...i came across this on facebook as shared by Daphne Riggs. Please read:
I have not said anything about the Zimmerman case until now -- 30 years ago my Uncle was 21 years old, engaged, and just starting life. He was Christmas shopping with his fiancĂ© and two Black men kept saying disgusting stuff to her as they were leaving the mall. These two men (Lamar Prosser, 18 and James L Gray, 19) followed my Uncle (who had a broken hand by the way) to his car. They argued and one of the men held him, while the other used a carjack to beat him to death in the shopping mall parking lot. I was in the second grade but I remember this like it was yesterday. My Uncle lived long enough to drive his fiancĂ© to a pay phone and then he fell over in her lap. These two black men got a slap on the wrist, served a few years in prison, and went on to live their lives. My family on the other hand was shattered and never the same. As I write this my heart starts to feel that all too familiar ache and my eyes well with tears – I am eight years old again… the pain has never eased. My Uncle... he lived only 21 years on this earth... these two men were in high school. They were caught because they were bragging at school that they had beaten a white man to death. I ask you... was my Uncles life less valuable than Trayvons? Where was the outrage regarding race? Where was the government intervention? Where was the public outcry for justice? With this said, no life holds value over another. Regarding Zimmerman and Trayvon -- these two men ended up in a situation that escalated into a nightmare. I think both Zimmerman and Trayvon were in the wrong and sadly Trayvon lost his life. Zimmerman should be held accountable for not listening to the police and should have stayed in his car. HOWEVER, our government has no business turning this into a gun issue, a race issue, or involving its self at all. This is where the public outcry should be… our government is becoming the monster and people like Al Sharpton are feeding the beast. This should NEVER have been made into a black versus white or involved race at all. This is about the loss of life.
