Creative Art Students of the University of Lagos Protest Against Sexual Harassment
Protest is gradually becoming the only tool
available for the University of Lagos Students in making their voices heard. At
about 09.51am in the early hours of Tuesday (25th June 2013). The
creative arts students, of the faculty of Arts, University of Lagos took to the
street of the school to protest the high spate of sexual harassment in the
department and it was said that one of the lecturers was caught in the act.
This made the students go round the school singing songs of protest making
their visit to the office of the Dean of Student Affairs and back to the
department.
According to one of the students, sexual harassment
has become a norm in the department among other issues such as administrative
inadequacies. The students complained that there is a high rate of failure of
students due to refusal of sexual advances made by at them by some of the
lecturers.
Anger was visible on the faces of the students with
placards with various inscriptions, one of the placards reads ‘who has the
authority, the HOD or Mereni?’ This name was visible on almost all the placard,
this leaves much to be guessed by people around ‘Enough is enough’, ‘You made
my body your drawing board’ are some of the inscriptions made by the students
on the cardboard.
We hope that the issue is resolved as soon as
possible.
